In 1999 Bristol Evening Post readers overwhelmingly voted John James the Evening Post Person of the Century in recognition of his generosity to the people of Bristol. This was followed in 2004 with John taking second place in BBC Points West’s competition to find the West’s Local Hero.
The story of this great Bristol philanthropist is available in the illustrated hardback publication “The Sky’s the Limit”.
Stylishly written by Roy Avery, former Headmaster of Bristol Grammar School. This is a fascinating insight into a remarkable man.
From humble beginnings in Bedminster to becoming one of the most successful businessmen in post-war Britain, John James never forgot his roots. He took immense pride in the City of his birth and felt that its residents had supported him in his business life and he wanted them to receive some of the benefits of his success. John gave away a fortune and became one of Britain’s great philanthropists, centring his giving on Bristol and Bristolians.
John James’ work continues today through the work of the John James Bristol Foundation.
